To Charleston, A Charming Southern GetAway

How do you decide on where to go for a girl’s trip? Well my two friends and I sat at a restaurant one day and we made a list of all the places we wanted to visit. Then we eliminated the places where we wanted to go as a family trip versus a girl’s trip. Next we start looking up why we might want to go to a certain location and what is the attraction that draws us to venture off that way.  Well one of the cities that made our list was Charleston.

Oh my gosh, what isn’t there to Love about Charleston? It is an adorable city where you can get lost in it’s history and enjoy the local cuisine and southern comfort food all while being close to the break-taking beaches. For this trip we rented a car so that it would be easier to explore.

Accommodations

When you are from the midwest, sometimes you just want to stay right by the ocean. There is something that is so calming about listening to the tide hit up on the shore and breathing in that salty ocean air. We stayed at an inn called the Seaside Inn Isle of Palms, South Carolina and the location was exactly what we wanted. Isle of Palms is about a 30 minute drive to Charleston.

Places to Eat or Grab A Drink

The food was so scrumptious! The Glass Onion, located in Charleston, had the most mouth watering fried green tomatoes. That was the first time that I have ever tried them and I would go back just for them. They served local shrimp and used local farm fresh produce.  Papi’s Taqueria’s has some amazing beach tacos and margaritas! Sea Biscuit Cafe is a must for breakfast one day! The french toast was so good! If you have a sweet tooth, I’d recommend Cupcake Down South for a snack. I really don’t think you can go wrong with the food in Charleston.

Activities

History is alive in Charleston and ready to tell it’s story to whoever is willing to listen. There are serval different types of tours you can take. My friends and I chose to do two different tours. A carriage ride tour and a walking tour. Each tour was unique and shared different historical facts, stories of the south, and explaining different sites. For the carriage ride we went through the Old South Carriage Company. I absolutely loved that you could pet the horse there too. Some tours will take you past Rainbow Road, which makes for a fun photo! The walking tour was quite unique too and a few stops along the walk such as a cemetery and a church. If your tours don’t see Rainbow Road or the Pineapple Fountain, I think it is worth the walk to see them.

We also went to Charleston’s City Market, one of the oldest markets in the US. It is quite enjoyable to walk through and you’ll find handmade, jewelry, and all kinds of unique items.

Charleston’s Tea Garden, where you will be greeted by the metal statue of Waddy the Frog, will teach how tea is made and the history of the tea plantation. In the gift store you can try many different flavors of tea so you can purchase the right one for you.

Magnolia Plantations and Gardens is absolutely stunning! Here we learned the history of the Drayton family and we toured the house, we also went on a boat tour through the swamp and learned about they had a rice fields at one time. I believe the cost was around 29 dollars for just the garden and then you do have to pay extra for the different tours.

Beach Life

There are places that you have the opportunity to windsurf, parasailing, and other water activities if you choose. We chose beach chairs and some great books. I thought it was so cool that we spotted areas that were blocked off turtle nesting. So be careful where you put your chairs and enjoy the peacefulness of the beach.

I would say this was one of my favorite destinations!
